The advent of widespread Internet has drastically altered every society that has gained access to it. However, this new world of nearly endless connection has started to interrupt the foundation of communication—that of face-to-face connection and interaction….

The next time you are in a restaurant or any other public space, take a look around at how many people are on their phones. You will quickly realize if you haven’t already that many people are either glued to the screens of their smartphones or are constantly checking them for updates. Even in intimate social situations, people are neglecting the company of others in favor of their smartphones. Although many people consider this behavior rude, it happens so often that it has come to be generally accepted as “normal.”

It happens so often, in fact, that U.K.-based researchers coined the term “nomophobia” (a clever abbreviation for the phrase “no mobile phone phobia”) to describe the fear and anxiety that many individuals face when they are without their phones.
