I’m fascinated by the number of young women who photograph themselves naked in front of mirrors and then upload the images to the web.

They appear to be the willing agents of their own representation –  faces often visible, happily creating evidence of their existence in this digital age.

Are they doing it just because they can? As a form of liberated self-expression?  It certainly wasn’t possible before. Somehow the fact that they are taking the pics alone in their bedrooms and bathrooms is intrinsically interesting.

Or are they being influenced by the porn culture they have grown up in – that this is part of what you do to be seen as a sexy, desirable female?

Either way, unlike the cave paintings created by ancient peoples as evidence of their existence, the self shot photos once uploaded can potentially remain in circulation and be viewed by billions of people during the lifetime of their creators as well as beyond.

Something to think about.
